‘I ask you all so earnestly to open girls’ schools in every village of India and try to uplift them. If the conditions of women are raised , then their children will, by their noble actions they shall glorify the name of the country.’ – Swami Vivekananda
You all might have heard this multiple times -‘Today’s girl child will be the mother of tomorrow’.Now this statement stands true because , as a mother a woman can give her child a sound nursing and a capable upbringing. A woman has the maximum impact on the social and economic decision making in the family generally. At a micro level , educated women undoubtedly help in making the the whole family including the older family members , understand the values and importance of education, and at the macro level , educated women add to the social and economical development of the nation as a whole.
Girl education is like sowing the seed which gives rise to a green , cheerful and full grown family plant. In ancient times girl’s education had a significant place in the society of India. Gargi and Maitreyi are the two esteemed colleges of Delhi University which have played and still continue to play a very encouraging role in spreading the education with regards to this subject to a great extent.
Nobody can deny the fact that women’s social and economic conditions started deteriorating with the passage of time. Instead of giving them education, they are being subjected to suffering under the Purdah System, Child Marriage etc.The saddest and the most unfortunate part is that in the 21st century , where people claim to be highly modernised these atrocities still exsist.Infact in some states female infanticide is prevalent even today. A new culture of eliminations of female foetus gradually become rampant , discrimination between the education of a girl and a boy is very common in rural areas. Parents feel that the education of a girl is wastage of time and money as their daughters will soon go their husbands after marriage and then their job would be to take care of the family, do the household chores and raise children. The biggest as well as the most shocking statement that I have ever heard from the people of rural areas with regards to sending their daughters to schools for studying is that the more educated the girl will be the more dowry we will have to pay. However, the poverty and illiteracy among such people is also a big reason for not sending their girls for studying to schools and colleges in the country. But gladly, things are being changing though slowly but gradually . The various awakening programmes launched by the government for encouraging the girls education have really helped us in achieving a lot. Some of the examples of the same are- the introduction TVs in rural areas , the 33% reservations given to females in panchayats have undoubtedly played a positive role in this particular direction. Now, the importance of educating the girl child is being correctly understood Several other policies like 30% reservations to female candidates in services , enhanced subsidy to girl entrepreneurs, less property tax on properties held by women , govt giving the daughters right to property of their parents, such similar to what the sons have been possessing from years now. Not only this but various self employment schemes have also been launched for the benefits of women like Women Entrepreneurs Development Programmes , Self Help Groups of women whose main focus was in mobilising and directing the parents to get their daughters educated. The educated women can help in eradicating many social evils which are prevalent in the society like dowry , killing the female foetus , discrimination in the matter of education of girls , illiteracy and so on.And what proves my point is that how certain women in historical times raised their their voices against these inequalities as a result of which we are in a better position than before. Many programmes of the govt. such as population control schemes , programmes which are related to the development of the rural area in which the cooperation as well as coordination among the rural masses is important, can be taken by the women representatives of the Panchayats in a better manner . If these representatives are educated then undoubtedly the implementation of the programmes will be a grand success. Believe it , education gives effectiveness and confidence to the women.
Undoubtedly trues the fact that a girl’s education stimulates education consciousness and some greater civc sense among their family members too. She can teach the family members more comfortably than anyone else can do. Illiteracy is the cause of many ills and nobody can deny it. The present day corruption in the bureaucracy particularly in the implementation of the schemes for the development of the rural segment to a large extent is because of the ignorances and the illiteracy among the rural representatives. A woman influences the activities and the decisions of a family more than anyone else does and can do. The educated girl is good enoygh to shoulder any type of responsibility. See the example of Kalpana Chawla , Kiran Bedi , Sonia Gandhi , Sushma Swaraj , Uma Bharti , Nirmala Sitaraman and so on. Each and everyone of them have earned a name and a certain stature in the society on their own. For the success of a person whether a man or a woman , education plays an important role , it is a reality accept it or not .But does a woman has no right to be successful then ? People take their rights to attain education away from them and what I can make out from it is that they don’t want the woman of today to be successful in whatever she does.I truly believe in the fact that they we stop thinking that we all need to be treated equally not as males and females but as humans , that will be the day when we all will start achieving and experiencing equality in real sense and in real manner. According to my senses, the woman got the privilege to attain education at a very later stage of their life than any man would have , that too because of he struggles they had to face to get their right – this right which should have been given to them much earlier and easier was denied and that is also a reason that even today we as a nation and as a society as still fighting the unseen but strongly felt battle to attain equality , not as Males and Females but as human beings. Education for the girls is more important as she not only builds the home but all routine responsibilities are taken care by her . An educated woman not only helps in nourishing the family in a better manner but can also help in earning. It is rightly said- God created Mothers because she can not be present everywhere. A women cares for a family like God – ‘One could judge the degree of civilisation of a country by the social and political position of its women’- Charles Fourier.
Now what education means to a female ? It means making the future of the nation well educated , free from any non sense superstitions , confident and assertive to do good for the family and most importantly for themselves. The present day girl is the mother of tomorrow.. Napoleon once said- Give me good mothers and I will give you a great nation.
She is the most crucial and revered entity. She must not be denied necessary education. Ignoring her, keeping her uneducated means creating an illiterate and ignorant society. So it is perfectly true that educating a girl child is like educating a family. Development can’t be accelerated unless and until girls are given the right kind of education and that too in the right direction.
Swami Vivekananda has aptly said – ‘ Educate your women first and leave to themselves , then they will tell you what reforms are needed.’
Now, this is what we generally think when we discuss certain topic. But I would like to put some light on the same by highlighting that what education means to me as a young girl of 21st century and why there is a need I get by full educational rights . The simple and succinct answer to this is – ‘because it is MY RIGHT which has been given to me by the constitution of India and nobody has a right to take it away from me.’ I may raise a family or I may not but this choice of mine can’t let anyone decide about my education. When for once in this world , people will stop thinking that household is an important part of a woman’s life . Why is a woman in India not accepted if she wants to earn her living , own her business , not get married , want to live with her parents and maybe adopt a child ? Now , my question to everyone promoting education for girls on the earlier stated grounds is will you deny educational right to a person like this? So , all these are cock and but stories so that those in rural backgrounds somehow let their daughters to be educated . A woman needs education because she needs to become independent , because she needs learn how to make wise choices for her own self , she needs education to become successful like any other man. Yes, women are child bearers but that is not their sole profession right ? They have their own life as well. When one says education needs to be given because they raise a family that is totally wrong. The perception with which people think that education is necessary for girls is totally abrupt . The simple and civic logic is that women need education just like the way men need it . Make a girl educated so that she can enable more girls to become educated. This is the way by which the society can become a better place to live in . Even, in urban areas the discrimination in education does not lie in elementary education but when it comes to higher education. Families feel that it is better to put the same money in their weddings instead of higher education. This is also where the problem lies. In every aspect girls have to fight their battles if they want to live the life that they want to , therefore education becomes more important for a girl I believe. However, we as a society should also understand the real meaning of equality and implement it in a proper required manner . The earlier the appropriate steps are taken , the wiser it will be. This is the first field where govt. is doing its bit in a much better manner than what we as a society are doing. Therefore, Wake up from your deep slumbers , before it get’s really late !! Make a society where Education is a Necessity and not a privilege !!
